Birding

Lake Vermilion Area Birding & Bird Watching

Lake Vermilion is home to more than 18 pairs of breeding bald eagles, 202 loons with 17 chicks (per 2011 survey), and 24-25 breeding pairs of osprey. Lake Vermilion is located at a transition zone between the northern temperate and boreal forests. An attentive birder can see –and hear– numerous bird species in the Lake Vermilion vicinity.

Beginning in August of 2011, the migration and  movement of several Lake Vermilion area loons can be tracked online here:  Loon Migration
